History of B44

The ‘B44’ post code is a region of North Birmingham, mainly covering the areas of Great Barr, Kingstanding, Oscott, New Oscott and Wyrley Birch.

The name ‘Kingstanding’ is said to be named after King Charles I, who visited the area during the English Civil War in 17th Century. It was until the 1930s a rural community before mass housing developments began in the area.

Here is a link for more information about the historic Odeon Cinema in Kingstanding built in the 1930’s which is now a Mecca Bingo Hall. The building is listed due to it’s unique Art Deco design.
